The Charm Of Hunting Pheasants In California

While California may not top the average pheasant hunter’s list of places to hunt, it actually offers a great challenge for the adventurous sportsmen. While sun, beaches, and bikinis may be the first thought in anyone’s head in thinking of California, warm temperatures aren’t always the case. Visalia, California is home to the nationals for the North American Gun Dog Association, or NAGDA. For the hunter who likes to test his dog against the agility of others the NAGDA trials are a once in a lifetime experience. Also, speaking to many of the hunters present a sportsman can get an idea of the pheasant hunting in California.

While the hunter may think California is warm and sunny all the time, it is actually not always the case at all. Every area has cool mornings and cold snaps just like every other region, and some of the northern counties even get snow. The hunter need not fear missing the cool fresh fall air on his normal pheasant hunting trip as California still offers it in towns like Sacramento, Lancaster, Birds Landing, Petaluma, Willows, Palermo, and others. Be sure to check the local rules and regulations of the area you plan to hunt though as they differ from area to area and year to year. Doing a simple online search will allow the hunter to not only research current laws, but also look for guide services to assist him on his hunt. There are also many outfitters offering valuable information on their websites.

Pheasant has long been considered a difficult bird to hunt. The best time for a hunter to take advantage of hunting is in the first few days of opening season; at this time the birds don’t yet realize they’re being targeted. After the first week a pheasant wises up to his opponent and is much more scarce the rest of the season. It’s important for a hunter to do some research and get to know the bird he’s after; pheasant love to fan their feathers in the warm rays of the sun, so oftentimes at midday they can be found in open areas. In the cool temperatures of morning though they are often tucked back under brush as far as they can be to avoid the cool weather. So with a little research and planning, a hunter can head to California in confidence that he’ll have a pheasant hunting experience unlike any other; and maybe check out a dog trial or two on the way.
